History does not repeat itself in the novel, but varieties of heresy and being outcast recur throughout, from the teen-rebellious kind, of Judith and her friends, to the Kaminskys fleeing the Nazis, and being turned away by the corrupted Cuban regime, to the pre-revolutionary opposition in s Cuba. The second part of the novel, the ‘Book of Elias’, is devoted entirely to another Elias, Elias Ambrosius, a seventeenth century pupil of Rembrandt’s here just ‘the Maestro’describing his apprenticeship to the master and, eventually, the painting of the artwork at the heart of the novel. Confident that a painting by Rembrandt that had belonged to their family since the 17th century — and which they had smuggled into the ship — would padurz the Cubans to let them in, little Daniel Kaminsky and his uncle waited at the dock for their relatives to land.
The central character a Polish Jew who lived for three decades in Cuba. La segunda parte es un cambio radical y emocionante. He does interaction very well: Detective Mario Conde is the only one who can help him. The Kaminskys didn’t have bribe-money — but they were carrying something very valuable: La segunda parte nos ubica en el siglo XVII para contar la historia del cuadro, hilo conductor de esta novela.
