The first chapter is a must read, a strong point of the story, a closing speech by the Moriguchi-sensei to her class. As he tries to work out what has happened, he receives a call from Moriguchi, who says that she has relocated kanqe bomb to his mother’s office. Where Confessions succeeds is in its layered construction—revealed slowly and, often, surprisingly in each subsequent confession—of the lives and forces that motivate both the killer and the teacher.

Anecdotally it certainly seems to be the case. She’s just such a headstrong person, confident, so sure of whatever stances she took. Thanks for telling us about the problem. I think readers who enjoyed like Defending Jacob may enjoy this one.

Review: ‘Confessions’ by Kanae Minato – Chicago Tribune
This is unlike many thrillers, English and translated alike, that I have read, proving both refreshing and mind-cramping. When Yuko Moriguchi’s four year old daughter, Manami is found dead on the school grounds where she works she weaves a final tale for her class about the real events of that day, concluding with the revealing of her revenge against the wrongdoers who are some of her students.
The way the characters talk, the way they reason, the things they do The Puterbaugh Fellow by. I listened to this book and the chapters are narrated in alternating voices and I enjoyed the narrator very much. I wanted to read another Japanese horror story but with the real monsters this time.
Still, Confessions is original and offers a sterling and surprising ending. Apparently this phenomenon is not uncommon in Japan and some experts speculate that there are over one million hikkomori in the country.
Minato lives in Japan. Other, the author is a former teacher herself.

Moriguchi reveals that because the HIV-positive biological father of her daughter Manami was ill, she used to bring Manami Mana Ashida to school with her. I can’t wait to watch it! The twists and the turns were incredible. All the questions this novel posed. Despite their ultimate amorality, the characters at the heart of The Dinner are fascinating and the moral dilemma is worth exploring, even as one prefers a world where the protagonists reach a different conclusion about the value of revenge or of pre-emptive strikes as a basis for personal or state actions.
Not that Yuko’s are the only maternal instincts gone wild here. She decides to commit murder-suicide to free her son and herself from torment, but in the ensuing struggle, Naoki kills her. Books like Confessions can make you vibrate with happiness.
