Hasn’t the formula for global stability as has Kissinger. Known for his hawkish foreign policy at a time when the Democratic Party was increasingly dovish, he is a foreign policy realist and considered by some to be the Democrats’ response to Republican realist Henry Kissinger.
Whether you agree or disagree with his stance as to how America should wield power as the sole remaining global hegemony, you still have to admire the vision in this man’s work.
When it was published inthis book was likely authoritative on international relations and America’s role and responsibilities as a hegemon. Two quotes to remember from “The Grand Chessboard” “Democracy is inimical to imperial globalization. The book being two decades old, and me not being super familiar with geopolitics from the mid- to late’s, I didn’t get much out of this, other than it’s a complicated situation that is still complicated today.

In Russia, this book has been for a long time considered an ultimate evil, akin to Mein Kampf. It’s an almost cold sweat inducing, manic-laugh giving, sad way the US has been trudging through the world.
The “black hole” that Brzezinski refers to has reemerged to offer resistance to veljka United States’ geopolicial goals.
While I don’t agree with the author’s call for American leadership in Central Asia, and I find it funny he completely avoids any discussion about the positives a destabilized Mid East and Asia would offer to American hegemony, I did find this book to be informative about the American leadership’s view on and justification for our expensive missions abroad.
Google Books — Loading Brzezinski had some great ideas and the book is occasionally interesting but please, please skip it. Major foreign policy events during his term of office included the normalization of relations with the People’s Sahovdka of China and the severing of ties with the Republic of Chinathe signing of the second Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty SALT IIthe brokering of the Camp David Accords, the transition of Iran to an anti-Western Islamic state, encouraging reform in Eastern Europe, emphasizing human rights in U.
Written inhe foresaw an excursion into Afghanistan and sees Central Asia as the primary battleground belika energy resources in the world. Reading it 15 years after it was written provides a reminder, maybe, into how easily we can get things wrong.
Although a number of Brzezinski’s recommendations never came to fruition, the scenarios that were likely to arise if they had not been used are quite on-point.
