After studying this self-contained textbook, students should understand the compilation process, be able to write a simple real compiler, and easily follow advanced books on the subject.

While discussing various compilation techniques, the author demonstrates their implementation through this case study. I have taught an undergraduate compilers course for over a decade. In addition, this book is fairly short and devotes relatively little space to any given topic. Mortensen’s writing style is clear and to the point, but peppered with an appropriate amount of humor and conversational tone.
